It seems the Japanese are on a quest to rid the world of all useful and productive humans. In addition to replacing nearly all factory workers, robots have seemingly permeated all parts of Japanese culture. Need a drink? Ask a robot bartender. Feeling tense? Take your worries to a friendly robot masseuse. It’s madness! But that’s not the worst. According to this article, a robot named Saya is being tested as a primary school teacher after a successful run as a receptionist.
I can’t say I’m surprised by this news (it does come from Japan after all) but it’s disheartening none the less. Of all professions that could be replaced by robot workers, I figured teaching would be way down on the list. A good teacher is irreplaceable. They don’t just teach, they build character and provide strong role models. Teachers can be confidantes and surrogate parents to their students. There are simply too many intangibles. I mean, how much would “Stand and Deliver” have sucked with a robot Jaime Escalante? Am I right, or am I right?
