What the hell is Syfy?

So I know that most of the time I blog about deadly robots and evil computer brains, but I’ve decided to take a break from that topic for today’s post. You see, I’ve recently come into some knowledge that has left me profoundly disturbed. Apparently, the Sci-Fi channel (the holy grail of bad made-for-TV monster movies, reruns of Twilight Zone, and amazing original programming like Battlestar Galactica) is undergoing a major re-branding campaign. Beginning June 7th, the Sci-Fi channel will be known as Syfy.

Syfy. What the hell does that mean? It sound like Sci-Fi, but it certainly doesn’t stand for science fiction. According to the company’s official press release the new brand will, “broaden perceptions and embrace a wider and more diverse range of imagination-based entertainment including fantasy, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure, as well as science fiction.”

Hmm. Sounds like a bunch of marketing B.S. to me. I guess I should give it the benefit of the doubt, but I fear change. Will all of my favorite shows still be aired? Will I be able to see Sci-Fi original movies like Mansquito? Only time will tell.
